This will be an opportunity for Atlantic Canadian youth (age 14-20) to collaborate with established and experienced international artists in the genres of music, dance, and video. The theme of the workshops is I have a story to tell…….where participants will delve into the various artistic mediums to learn about expression and stories of indigenous and diaspora youth. The workshops will address the question of how you can use arts to tell your story.

The First Voices group will perform in a showcase of indigenous artists from around the world. The performers are Atlantic Canadian and International Indigenous youth who have come together over the past four years in a project called First Voices.  The project brings together Atlantic Canadian Indigenous Youth together with Youth from the South through the arts to foster cooperation and understanding.  Every year has seen a different artistic focus: dance, music, video and multimedia. This year, all participants are coming together in Halifax to meet, share stories and to inspire us with their performances.

Join us for an unforgettable celebration of Indigenous art from Botswana, Chile, Honduras, Guatemala the Philippines and Canada.

FIRST VOICES INTERNATIONAL INDIGENOUS ARTS FESTIVAL

There will be workshops for youth 14-20 which will be held in the following genres:

• Music

• Dance

• Video

• Visual arts

The evening will be capped off with a performance given by the First Voices Project International participants. These indigenous artists are coming from Botswana, Chile, Honduras, Guatemala, the Philippines and Canada.

Date: October 2nd, the day after Treaty Day!

Mike is a talented singer/songwriter/musician from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In his efforts to understand his own indigenous Mi’kmaw roots, he questions, concludes and expresses his beliefs while exposing stigmas through his lyrics and music.  Mike was recently nominated as one of Canada’s ‘Champions of Change’ in recognition of his exceptional volunteer contributions. The Canadian participants got together in Mahone Bay, NS in August in the midst of a trying heat wave to begin preparations for the upcoming tour (scheduled for October 15-25). Our Philippine participants have their passport applications in to the Canadian Embassy in Manila. Fingers crossed that all goes well!
